Integration of Design Tools into a Single Workflow for the Optimization of Contact Lens

01 October, 15:30 - 16:00 CEST

Contact lens design traditionally involves a broad assortment of software tools, from the geometry engine used to define the three-dimensional shape of the lens to simulation tools to help predict on eye behavior and wearer comfort. These systems are typically operated manually by expert users in a standalone manner, making the process of improving a lens design both iterative and time consuming. Recently, modeFRONTIER has been used to create an integrated design system to enable optimization of the design geometry based on predicted performance in handling, wearer comfort, and dynamic models of on-eye rotation and centration. This system has enabled the development and optimization of new contact lens designs in a far shorter time frame than was traditionally required, and has allowed any individual designer to explore far more of the design space because they are not constrained by having to rely on other users to perform the simulations that are outside their realm of expertise. A general overview of the system will be provided as well as examples of how the design space search has led to novel designs that might not have been otherwise considered.
